Friends,

We’ve got some good news to share: A federal three-judge panel just ruled that Alabama must use a fair map that includes two Black-opportunity districts in the state.

This map was redrawn after a previous, gerrymandered map was found to be in violation of the Voting Rights Act in 2023. And this bipartisan-appointed panel of judges just upheld it once again, ordering Alabama to use this fair map until 2030.

It’s also a meaningful victory for Black Alabamians, who now have the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice in two congressional districts. It’s a major win for all who care about fair maps and equal access to the ballot. And it’s a resounding reminder of exactly why we fight.

We win the fight for fair maps state by state, district by district — and by never, ever giving up. The power of voters is still under attack right now in several states across the country — make a donation to fund AOTL’s fight against those who want to undermine our democracy.

This victory comes at a moment when some state lawmakers, with pressure from the Trump Administration, are taking unprecedented steps to redraw their congressional maps mid-decade — a sinister effort to pull off extreme gerrymanders to lock in unearned, unchecked power.

This victory is a sign that the rule of law and fairness can prevail.

The American people are with us: According to a new poll, 76% of Americans view gerrymandering as unfair. That’s why it’s essential that we continue to call out these extremist power grabs and hold politicians accountable for trying to rig the rules of the game.

Here’s the thing: even in Alabama, this fight isn’t over. We expect the state to appeal, and it’ll be on the fair maps movement to be ready to respond if a future court ruling changes the map — and keep fighting for the basic principles that our democracy was founded on. Our strategy works if every one of us pitches in and does our part. And with attacks rising by the day, that fight takes enormous resources.
