This is yet another appalling attack on the free press.
Five Palestinian journalists with the Al Jazeera network were assassinated in targeted Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Sunday.
That means at least 242 Palestinian journalists in Gaza have now been killed by Israel since October 7, 2023.
According to an analysis by the Watson Institute, Israel has killed more journalists in the last two years than were killed in the U.S. Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the wars in Yugoslavia, and the war in Afghanistan, combined.
It’s another statistic that proves the depravity and inhumanity of Israel’s assault on Gaza. And behind those statistics are people — brave, selfless people who did their duty to provide information about the Gaza genocide to the world, knowing full well that they would be marked for assassination by the Israeli military.
The killing of journalists is a war crime. It is a violation of international law, and we have a responsibility to stop these war crimes from continuing.
But when the United Nations and the International Court of Justice seek consequences and accountability for Israeli war criminals like Benjamin Netanyahu and his top officials, the United States steps in to act as a shield.
That’s why I’ve been leading the charge in Congress to change the status quo on America’s role in the Gaza genocide and Israel’s occupation.
We’ve seen leaders across the spectrum come together to demand a surge in humanitarian aid. We’ve seen Democrats in the Senate vote against more military aid for Israel. We have to keep pushing, for the people of Gaza and their futures.
Hallie, and I asking you to join me today in pressuring my colleagues in Congress to take action to protect journalists in Gaza, end all military aid to Israel, and seek accountability and justice for war crimes. Add your name to my petition today and join our pro-peace movement that grows every day.

No matter the conflict, journalists should always be off-limits. Israel’s deliberate targeting of the press proves their disregard for international law and basic decency. We must act.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
