john,
August marks National Immunization Awareness Month, a time when health professionals help spread the word on why it’s absolutely critical for us to receive vaccines at various stages in life. We’ve heard and seen a lot lately about measles. But many people don’t know what other diseases immunizations protect us from.
Babies get protected from polio, which is still circulating elsewhere in the world. They also get several vaccines to prevent meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, and death. There’s a vaccine that keeps young children from getting a vomiting/diarrhea illness that spreads like wildfire and used to send hundreds of thousands of US children to the ER each year, and hospitalize about 60,000 of them. Before that vaccine, parents were rehydrating themselves and their children with Pedialyte, one teaspoon at a time.
Teens get vaccines to protect them from meningitis, whooping cough, and cancer. Adults get protection from pneumonia, RSV, and shingles. By the way, when Democrats held the majority in the House, we made all vaccines free for seniors on Medicare!
Most parents today have never heard of the diseases that vaccines protect their childrenand all of us—from. That is proof of their success!
It also explains some parents’ hesitancy about vaccinating. If the disease doesn’t seem like a real threat, and anti-vaccine activists are working every day to scare parents away from vaccinating their children, we end up where we are today—with measles on the rise after it was formally eradicated in the year 2000.
As a pediatrician, I’ve answered a lot of parents’ questions about vaccines. That’s my job and my pleasure. And the vast majority of those parents made the right decision to protect their children from really bad diseases.
But now we have a Secretary of Health and Human Services, RFK, Jr., spewing misinformation about vaccines and trying to convince parents that the vaccine is worse than the disease! He has brought fringe opinions right to the heart of federal public health policy, and that is dangerous.
As the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, RFK Jr. has called for a review of the recommended vaccine schedule for kids, not based on science or public health guidance, but based on conspiracy theories and personal beliefs. He’s even used his power to pull $500 million in funding for mRNA vaccine research – the breakthrough technology developed over 10 years with NIH funding that brought us two COVID-19 vaccines in less than a year. Those vaccines saved millions of lives. And mRNA technology holds the most promise for quick vaccine development that will help us survive the next pandemic.
As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I hear directly from our public health agencies about how they’re already under-resourced, overwhelmed, and stretched thin. Now, they have to worry about funding cuts and devastating research halts that could further hold us back as a nation in health and science.
Let's not sugarcoat anything: What we’re seeing from this current administration is pseudoscience and personal ideology masquerading as policy, and it will hurt ALL of us. As a doctor and as your congresswoman, I will continue to shine a bright light on these lies and set the record straight. Every child deserves access to the vaccines and treatments that keep them safe and healthy.
The challenge is breaking through all the noise and partisan games. That’s where I need your help. Keep this pediatrician in the House! Trump and RFK Jr. are pushing an agenda that ignores evidence and puts real people's lives at risk—and I’m using my platform to hold them accountable.
I promise to always fight for you and your family’s health in Congress, and I’m ready to do my part to ensure we have a blue House that will join me in those efforts. If you're ready to stand up to extremists who only seem interested in taking us backwards, please chip in $5 right now. >> [link removed]

Kim
