The enduring power of independent nonprofit journalism

Dear Reader,

For nearly two decades, ProPublica has exposed abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust, and we have seen how those facts inspire change.

Today we published ProPublica’s first Impact Report of 2025. ProPublica’s newsroom is focused on journalism that spurs change. We publish these reports three times a year to detail the real-world impact inspired by our stories and to hold ourselves accountable to our mission. I invite you to take a look at the full report to see how rigorous investigative journalism can spur reform and right wrongs.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • Aiming to prevent maternal deaths under the state’s abortion ban, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the Life of the Mother Act into law in June. The law was written in response to our investigations that laid bare how state abortion bans lead to preventable deaths, and it represents a remarkable turn among the Republican lawmakers who were the original supporters of the ban.
  • In March, Alaska’s Supreme Court placed new limits on how long criminal cases can be postponed after reporting by ProPublica and the Anchorage Daily News found some cases had spent as long as a decade waiting to reach juries, potentially violating the rights of victims and defendants alike.
  • Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation in May to overhaul the state’s towing laws following an investigation by ProPublica and The Connecticut Mirror that revealed how state laws have come to favor towing companies at the expense of low-income residents.

This report also includes a behind-the-scenes look at our 2025 Pulitzer Prize-winning series “Life of the Mother,” which exposed the fatal consequences of abortion bans and sparked urgent calls for change. This peek into the reporting process illustrates ProPublica’s approach to accountability journalism, with investigations driven by urgent questions in incredibly complex and emotionally fraught circumstances.

We are proud of the impact chronicled in this report. It is a testament to the power of nonpartisan, independent investigations in the public interest, and to our mission to shine a light on injustice and hold power to account. But we know that the moral force of accountability journalism doesn’t come from the facts alone. It also comes from you. Every time you read, share or support our work, you help ensure that our stories reach more people and that hard truths can’t be ignored.

In many ways, 2025 has been unprecedented. But this remains constant: ProPublica will continue to produce investigative journalism in the public interest, to track spheres of influence and document harms. We are committed to telling stories with depth, clarity and focus so readers will know not just what happened, but why it matters. Thank you for being an integral part of our work and impact.

With gratitude,

Robin Sparkman
President, ProPublica
