America’s Future Is Texas

There’s been a lot of talk about Texas recently. And rightfully so, because what we’re witnessing in Texas affects all of us.

Anti-democracy forces have trapped us in a perpetual era of redistricting. Their latest stop is Texas, where Republicans have proposed an egregiously gerrymandered congressional map at the direction of Donald Trump.

Here’s why this is so concerning:

Texas’s congressional map is already gerrymandered. But let’s dive into how that came to be. Texas’s population rate has been growing faster than any other state, with a good chunk of these newcomers leaning politically toward the left. So how have conservatives been able to hold on to power? John, Republicans have manipulated their way into representation.

In 2003, when conservatives took over the state legislature, they rammed through a redistricting plan that carved up the state, ensuring they would hold absolute power. Politicians were able to cherry-pick the districts they would represent—instead of the other way around—and pass deeply unpopular policies on everything from abortion to voting rights, prompting other red states to follow lead.

To date, the GOP has replicated this process nationwide, creating congressional districts that disenfranchise voters of their basic right to fair representation.

Put simply, when Republicans shamelessly attack the voting power of marginalized communities in Texas, it sets a national precedent. Now, if Texas moves forward with this mid-decade redraw, we know other states will follow their lead.

The good news is that the NDRC was created for moments like these. Republicans have shown us time and time again that they will always try to build artificial power, and we have a proven strategy to deploy both offensive and defensive strategies to protect fair maps and fair representation for the short and long term.
