Do we want a new fracked gas pipeline buried in the seabed off our shores? An expensive project that we don't need, that would pollute our waters, harm marine life, and worsen the climate crisis? No! Pitch in to block this nefarious project!:
And now for some good news! The hard work of climate groups (including us!) across New York State yields some progress
Even when we pass a bill in Albany, we still need state agencies to carry them out. In July, New York's Building Code Council updated the state building code to incorporate the All-Electric New Buildings Act, passed in 2023 with Brooklyn AM Robert Carroll and State Senator Kevin Parker as the primary sponsors. New York will now be the first state to require newly constructed low-rise buildings to be all-electric beginning in 2026 and larger new buildings beginning in 2029. Also in 2023, NYS passed the Build Public Renewables Act, with Brooklyn's AM Emily Gallagher as a primary sponsor. This empowered a state agency, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), to build and own large-scale renewable energy projects when private developers failed to build what's needed to meet our NYS climate mandates. However, NYPA's initial plan in 2024 was anemic. Climate groups, including 350Brooklyn, packed hearings to tell NYPA to aspire higher. As a result, in July NYPA announced a new draft that more than doubled their ambitions. This is the power of the grassroots!

Celebrating our volunteers: Meet Susan, Co-lead of our Plastic-Free workgroup (with her reusable coffee cup)
Susan has a vision for Brooklyn, one full of solar panels, permeable sidewalks and roads, more thriving plants and trees. Brooklyn has so much potential for being more liveable, she says, with so many good groups working to make it so. She's loved helping the Plastic Free workgroup field imaginative contingents at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade with their strong messages these past two years. More sobering has been joining with groups across New York State to work to pass the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, which came so close to passing this past June. This has been, she says, a real education, as it shows how much you need to stay in for the long haul. But also, she says, taking action like this "gives you hope, eases anxiety," and helps you build your community. We so appreciate Susan's vision and persistence!
