Friend – Last year, an ACLU report found that police dogs seriously injured hundreds of Californians – most were unarmed and many were suspected only of a minor offense, or no offense at all. The powerful police lobbyists paid to undermine accountability in this state worked to try to pass AB 3241, which would have allowed police to continue terrorizing communities with police dogs. Thankfully, the Legislature rightly rejected the bill based on its lack of meaningful reform. Just a few months later, the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) updated its guidelines for police dogs. Now, Assemblymember Pacheco is trying to get the Legislature to make these faulty guidelines state law without public input or real oversight.
AB 400 is an attempt to dupe the Legislature into passing these flawed standards written by the police lobby, locking abusive practices in place. We must demand real reform that is led by the community, not those being paid to help police skirt accountability. Tell your State Senator to vote NO on AB 400. Thanks for taking action, David Trujillo |
