State worker groups oppose suggested IPERS cuts, new teacher pay model • Iowa Capital Dispatch

Kim Reynolds’ DOGE task force, in their mission to make Iowa’s state government more efficient, has suggested privatizing incoming public state employees’ IPERS and other benefits. This will only make Iowa a less attractive state to work in, and could potentially cut the earned retirements of current workers.

Tariffs could make your car insurance more expensive

This headline explains itself — Trump's tariffs are making life more expensive for everyone.

Trump places DC police under federal control, deploys National Guard
Trump, in a troubling authoritative move, has seized control of D.C.’s police and deployed the National Guard in the city. Trump’s reasoning for this power grab is based on a lie. D.C. is not experiencing a rise in crime. In reality, it’s the lowest that it’s been in decades. The situation is developing, but one thing remains clear above all: this should be America’s country, not Donald Trump’s.

Representatives on the Record

Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (202) 225-6576

Does Rep. Miller-Meeks support Trump’s tariff war? Prices are rising by the day. How far do they have to go before she steps in and does something? Why is she standing idly by in Congress as Trump’s tariffs raise inflation, instead of fighting for her constituents who are hurt by them?

Representative Ashley Hinson (202) 225-2911

Does Rep. Hinson support Trump’s tariff war? Prices are rising by the day. How far do they have to go before she steps in and does something? Why is she standing idly by in Congress as Trump’s tariffs raise inflation, instead of fighting for her constituents who are hurt by them?

Representative Zach Nunn (515) 400-8180

Does Rep. Nunn support Trump’s tariff war? Prices are rising by the day. How far do they have to go before he steps in and does something? Why is he standing idly by in Congress as Trump’s tariffs raise inflation, instead of fighting for his constituents who are hurt by them?

Representative Randy Feenstra (712) 224-4692

Does Rep. Feenstra support Trump’s tariff war? Prices are rising by the day. How far do they have to go before he steps in and does something? Why is he standing idly by in Congress as Trump’s tariffs raise inflation, instead of fighting for his constituents who are hurt by them?

Note From the Chair

Hey folks! Rita Hart here.

Kim Reynolds’ DOGE task force is proving just as sketchy as Elon Musk’s. The task force is set up to make our government more efficient, but members seem more focused on cutting programs and services Iowans use every day.

Two ideas they’ve proposed have been making changes to Iowa’s public employee retirement system, called IPERS, and tying teacher pay to student performance. Changing from a defined benefits program to a defined contribution program will fundamentally change one of the best-funded retirement systems in the country since 1953. Gutting state employee retirement accounts will make it harder to retain good workers, as well as hurt the communities that rely on their retirement income. Tying teacher pay to student achievement is somehow an even worse idea, and will only end up punishing teachers for student situations that are simply out of their control.

These two proposals boil down to the same thing: the state can save money if we squeeze it out of the people who work for us. This isn’t the kind of thinking that’s going to solve Iowa’s problems.

Iowa needs a change in leadership. And every day we’ll continue to fight to get it. I appreciate your continued involvement and support of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Sincerely,

Rita Hart
