Dear John,

They were only 7 and 8 years old.

Avani and Zinda β€” two young elephants at Dublin Zoo, who should have had decades of life ahead of them. Instead, they died in captivity.

Not from old age. Not from natural causes.
They died from a virus linked to stress β€” stress caused by captivity, boredom, and unnatural social disruption.

This is not conservation. It’s cruelty.

In our recent report ([link removed]) , The Unnatural Lives of Elephants in Captivity: The Case of Dublin Zoo, co-authored by leading elephant experts, we expose a grim truth: a system built on suffering, mismanagement, and myths of conservation.

The report reveals a decades-long cycle of forced transfers, premature breeding, and lifeless enclosures. It makes one thing clear: zoos are no place for elephants β€” not in Ireland, not in the UK, not anywhere.

This is not a moment of calm β€” it’s a sign of deep distress. Filmed in Dublin Zoo, this elephant’s endless swaying is a behaviour seen only in captivity, born of boredom, stress, and broken spirits. These magnificent animals deserve freedom, not a lifetime behind bars.

This World Elephant Day, we’re calling on governments to:
* Ban elephant breeding and imports
* Begin phasing elephants out of zoos altogether

To make them listen, we need public pressure, political momentum β€” and the power to keep the truth in the spotlight.

Will you donate today to help us fight for a future where no elephant is born to die in captivity?

Your gift will directly support:
* Bold advocacy and government lobbying
* Campaigns exposing elephant suffering
* Legal and policy work for lasting change
* Public education to dismantle zoo industry myths

Some zoos β€” like Belfast and Paignton, have already stopped keeping elephants. With your help, we can make sure others follow.

But the clock is ticking. The longer we wait, the more elephants pay the price.

Please, donate today β€” not just for Avani and Zinda, but for every elephant still trapped behind bars.

They deserve more than a life of confinement. They deserve freedom.

Thank you for everything you do for animals, we simply could not be here, fighting for their freedom, without you!

For the animals,

Laura Walton
