A fierce storyteller and mentor now needs the community he’s served for decades.
Hello! I wanted to share the story of someone who has captured the heart and history of our community for decades, and who now needs our help. David Calvert, a well-known Nevada photographer and photojournalist, was recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer. For years, David’s work has documented life across Nevada, from the Nevada Legislature to local nonprofits like Renown Children’s Hospital, Communities in Schools, and the Reno Philharmonic. His photographs have not only told our stories but also supported countless causes. He’s also mentored hundreds of students at UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism, sharing his skill, passion, and humor. Now, as he begins intensive treatment, David and his partner, Marissa, are facing overwhelming financial uncertainty. Friends and colleagues have launched a GoFundMe to help them remain in their home, care for their three dogs, and cover essential expenses during this difficult time. If you’ve ever enjoyed his photos, learned from his teaching, or simply appreciate the people who make Reno’s stories come alive, we hope you’ll consider contributing to or sharing his fundraiser. David has given so much to our community. This is our chance to give something back. Thank you for reading and for any support you can offer. ![]() |
