After gutting Medicaid and other social safety nets, the government now
wants to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on more mass incarceration.
Letcher Prison has the potential to become the most expensive federal
prison in U.S. history — and Representative Hal Rogers (KY-05) just made
it harder for us to fight back.

Rogers slipped a dangerous provision into the 2025 House Appropriations
bill. This rider would block legal challenges to the $505 million prison
from anyone outside Eastern Kentucky — even though it’s funded by your
federal tax dollars — no matter where you live — and could incarcerate
people from anywhere within a 500 mile radius of the facility.
This is unjust and unfair. If it’s our money, it should be our decision.

This prison faces opposition from every angle, and even corrections
experts everywhere agree: it’s wasteful and unnecessary. But that’s not
all, the prison is also opposed by the Department of Justice, both
Presidents Biden and Trump, and finally, local residents and advocates.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Prisons is struggling with staffing shortages,
unsafe conditions, and billions in deferred maintenance on existing
facilities. At a time when the U.S. prison population has dropped 25%
since 2009, why spend over half a billion dollars to build a prison we
don’t need? [ [link removed] ]That’s why we need you to sign the petition asking your
representative to remove Section 223 from the 2025 House Appropriations
Bill.
We need your voice now. Please urge your Representative to:
* Oppose funding for the Letcher Prison
* Reject Section 223 and any attempts to silence legal opposition
* Invest in fixing what’s broken — not build more prisons
