Dear Friend, We are outraged by federal funding cuts. But like our ancestors who pooled resources in mutual aid societies and passed the plate in Black churches, we will use that outrage to fuel our fight. This Black Philanthropy Month, we're asking you to join a powerful tradition—one that has sustained our community for generations. Tragically, the National Urban League is at risk of losing $15 million in federal funding—resources that provide essential programs and services to people across the country. Gone! are programs that give Black communities equitable access to education, housing, health, justice, and jobs. Gone! are opportunities for Black Americans to realize a standard of living equal to whites. Friend, in the spirit of Black Philanthropy Month, we're asking everyone to consider a gift of $25 —the same amount that could fund a student's textbook or a family's emergency assistance. Of course, if you can give $50, $100, $150, or more, every dollar helps us fight back against these devastating cuts. Take a look at the cuts and who is at risk because of them: - Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Initiative—this cut means fewer minority students will receive the higher education they deserve. 480 students will no longer receive life-changing education services.
- The Urban Youth Pathways program—Makes it tougher for underserved youth and young adults to access livable wage jobs and career opportunities. 5,000 people will lose access to training, certification, and workforce services.
- Two housing counseling programs—redlining these programs makes it more difficult for African Americans to buy their first home and avoid foreclosure. 36,000 individuals will go without financial and housing counseling.
For generations, our community has understood that when we give together, we rise together. From the Underground Railroad to today's movement for equity, we've always funded our own freedom. There is strength in numbers, Friend. Just as our ancestors pooled resources in mutual aid societies, your $25 gift—or whatever you can afford—joins thousands of others fighting back. In our 115-year history, it is members of our Movement who have helped us stand strong. Because of you, we reach about 4 million people each year through our 92 affiliates in 36 states and the District of Columbia. What if your gift today is the one that uplifts a working mother, an aging caregiver, a struggling student, or a child who lives in poverty? That is entirely possible and wonderful. Whether it's $25, $50, $100, $150, or whatever you can afford—your gift joins a movement. Every dollar matters, every voice counts. Thank you for your incredible dedication to our Black and Brown communities. With determination, Marc H. Morial President and Chief Executive Officer P.S. These aren't proposed cuts—they've already happened. The gap is real. Please rush your gift today to help us recover. And remember, August is Make a Will Month—consider including NUL in your estate planning to ensure our fight for equity continues for generations.
