1) Only One-In-Twenty Union Members Voted for Their Union

The Left loves to talk about “threats to democracy.” That’s ironic because a new study by the Institute for the American Worker finds that of the eight million private sector union members today, fewer than 400,000 voted for the current leadership. Less than 5% of the current workers approved the union.

That’s the lowest level ever.

Even worse, for those who do vote, instead of requiring secret ballots, many of the unions use card check. This bullies workers into voting yes, or they might get a brick tossed through their living room window.

Trump should call for all unions to have secret ballot elections every two years, as a way to get rid of corrupt union bosses.

2) Winding Down

We’re all for using non-environmentally sensitive government land for development purposes to increase jobs, reduce the debt, and increase our national wealth. As we at UP have shown, the U.S. is sitting on a treasure chest of tens of trillions of dollars of energy and mineral resources.

What’s strange is that the climate change movement wants to industrialize the entire American landscape with windmills and solar farms.

That's why we cheered out loud last week when the Trump administration canceled the 50,000-acre (!) Lava Ridge wind project in Idaho.

Energy expert Robert Bryce tells us: “During more than 15 years of reporting on the solar and wind projects, I’ve never seen anything like the opposition to the Lava Ridge wind project.” In 2013, the Idaho state legislature voted unanimously against the construction project.

The project would infringe on the Minidoka National Historic Site, which commemorates the incarceration of thousands of Japanese-American citizens during World War II.

Yet the “go green” Biden administration quietly approved the eyesore just weeks before Joe exited the White House.

Congrats to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum for pulling the plug. He reaffirmed his smart energy policy.

“We will no longer provide preferential treatment towards unreliable, intermittent power sources that harm rural communities, livelihoods and the land,” Burghum declared.

Well said, Mr. Secretary. Now cancel the dozens of other green energy scams that threaten to industrialize America’s purple mountains majesty.

3) Are Consumers Going To Start Paying for Tariffs?

Since “Liberation Day,” it appears that U.S. companies have absorbed most of the cost of Trump’s tariffs. However, a new study by Goldman Sachs predicts that soon the burden will be passed on to the final consumers ([link removed]) in the form of higher price tags. As of June, US consumers have absorbed an estimated 22% of the tariffs. But that could rise to 67% if the latest tariffs follow the pattern of levies in previous years.

Warning: We don’t entirely trust the Goldman estimates. The study calculates that only 14% of the tax is borne by the foreign producers. That's ridiculous in our opinion. If that were the case, then foreigners wouldn’t be so aggressively opposing the tariffs. We think that closer to half of the burden of a tariff comes out of the profits of foreign importers in lower per unit profits and lower volume sold at the higher post-tariff price

4) Does Anyone Seriously Believe Washington D.C. Is Safe?

President Donald Trump said Monday he's putting Washington D.C.’s police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to patrol the streets. He was met with predictable criticism.

Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser claimed that violent crime hit its lowest level in more than three decades last year. But how sure is she of those numbers?

Just two weeks ago, Police Commander Michael Pulliam was suspended for allegedly altering crime statistics to make it appear violent crime has fallen dramatically.

The Washington D.C. police union is accusing the entire department of deliberately falsifying crime data. “When our members respond to the scene of a felony offense where there is a victim reporting that a felony occurred, inevitably there will be a lieutenant or a captain that will show up on that scene and direct those members to take a report for a lesser offense,” Fraternal Order of Police Chairman Gregg Pemberton says.

He calls the district’s crime reports “preposterous.” And even the official numbers show Washington has the third-highest gun homicide rate among U.S. cities with populations over 500,000.

And Washington D.C. residents certainly feel under siege from crime. A May poll by the Washington Post found that half of those surveyed in the capital said crime was either an “extremely serious” or “very serious” problem. Many people no longer report some crimes because they believe police will do nothing or they are intimidated by their criminal neighbors.

That's some quote. How safe can a city be when its residents live in fear of discussing crime in their neighborhood?

5) Beware: The “Smart Grid” Will Automatically Turn Off Your Air Conditioner and Set Your Thermostat

You might want to watch this video clip from Patricia Poppe, the CEO of California utility PG&E, speaking at the World Economic Forum. She excitedly explains how the government will soon be able to harness the power of AI to automatically disable your air conditioner and other appliances - and even drain your electric vehicle battery to "smooth demand" and conserve energy:

Poppe

The state took a very aggressive action to send out an emergency text message to all of the California cell phones, and instantaneously, 2,500 megawatts came off the system. We watched the load curve drop with a straight line, which told me and reaffirmed a hypothesis that I have, that demand management with modern technology can be automated. We shouldn't have to send a text message. It worked.

Host

But you basically said, Guys, switch off your aircon. Stop boiling your kettle. No more tea.

Poppe

It was an emergency message that said, yes, please reduce your usage. Californians responded because they're good citizens. But what it says is that it could be automated with smart devices, WiFi communicating devices, and electric vehicles as a power resource, bi-directional power resource, back to the grid, would be even an additional asset.

This is a technology that has never been available in all of our years of delivering energy, and electricity in particular, to the people of the world.

We can now manage demand and have the right use at the right time…It will happen, and I'm very optimistic.
