Hi friend,
From Kenya to Tunisia and in many other countries, people have taken to the streets to protest debt-imposed austerity, including cuts to public services like education and health.
Increasingly, the response by governments has been to crackdown on protests, restrict free speech and shut down democratic spaces.
Our latest research reveals how the worst debt crisis in thirty years, combined with decades of austerity measures, has created fertile ground for repression and authoritarianism. Click the button below to read our new blog – Debt, Democracy and the rise of Authoritarianism.

As part of this research, I spoke to activists and campaigners from countries around the world who are demanding an end to the debt crisis and standing up for justice – often in the face of extreme repression.
I felt incredibly moved and inspired by the stories I heard; from the protesters facing increasingly hostile laws restricting the right to protest in countries like Argentina and Pakistan, to those fighting against undemocratic deals that will tie their countries into high debt payments for decades.
As Sharda in Suriname explains, the impacts of these loans are felt by some more acutely than others:
“As always, the price of debt is paid by the most vulnerable”
- Sharda Ganga, Surinamese debt campaigner.

Debt is not just a financial issue, it’s a political one. Our new research is a powerful argument for urgent action on the debt crisis. And a testament to the courage of campaigners and activists around the world who continue to demand action in spite of increasingly repressive authoritarianism.
Thank you for taking action and standing in solidarity with them! I know that by campaigning together we can cancel the debt.
In solidarity,
Tess, Zak, Wiz, Eva and everyone at Debt Justice
