In a disturbing and blatant abuse of power, President Donald Trump is stoking violence against our communities by weaponizing the U.S. military against everyday people. He is planning a hostile federal takeover of our nation’s capital—seizing the city's police department and deploying 800+ National Guard troops to descend upon the residents.1

Since Trump came into office, D.C. has been an epicenter of resistance. From the Women's March to countless other rallies and events, Trump wants to squash all dissent against his unpopular, authoritarian agenda.
And it won't stop at Washington, D.C. Trump named Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Oakland in his speech, insinuating they could be next.2 "We’re just going to see what happens," he said.3 Trump intends to build a police state right out of an authoritarian playbook. We have to come together now to stop him now before he replicates this in cities and states across the country.

Trump signed an executive order taking over the D.C. police force under the guise of tackling crime—claiming there is a public emergency.4 He is spreading inflammatory and fearmongering lies about our communities in order to justify his overreach, but we know the truth. Local leaders know best how to take care of their cities, and crime in D.C. is the lowest it’s been in 30 years because of those efforts.5
Meanwhile, when our capital was under attack by violent insurrectionists—one of the most violent days for law enforcement in recent history, leading to the injury of more than 140 people and the death of seven—Trump did not send the National Guard.6 This outright hypocrisy is sickening.
Trump thinks he can lie to the American people and turn the government and our military against the people. Not on our watch. Sign the petition to show that the American people will fight this fascist power grab!
This is an escalation of the Trump regime’s illegal actions in Los Angeles earlier this year, when Trump directed the National Guard to Los Angeles without the governor’s permission to carry out his inhumane ICE raids.7 Due to widespread outrage and clear illegality, California officials challenged Trump's deployment of the National Guard in LA in court.8 But that didn’t stop Trump from escalating his militarized efforts in D.C. And since D.C. is a federal district, not a state, Trump is hoping for a clearer path for his hostile takeover.
For decades, Washington, D.C., residents have been advocating for statehood. But instead, Trump and MAGA Republicans want to strip Washington, D.C., of its elected leaders. Just this year, Senator Mike Lee and Representative Andy Ogles introduced legislation to end the D.C. Home Rule Act—a bill passed in 1973 that gives D.C. some ability to self-govern, including establishing an elected council and mayor.9
And Trump has made it clear that he, too, wants to overturn the Home Rule Act—a move that would leave D.C.'s nearly 700,000 residents no representation. But this is still a democracy, and Trump can't permanently take over D.C. without action by Congress.
We need Congress to intervene and stop this erosion of our fundamental rights and freedom—and we need to come together to make it clear that Americans will not be silent in the face of this fascist power grab.
