JOHN, this is Paul Eaton. I served in the United States Army for over three decades, retired as a Major General, and now serve as a Senior Advisor to VoteVets.
Living in the United States today requires each of us to be clear eyed and unflinching with regard to the actions of Donald Trump.
With that in mind, allow me to break down today’s events:
The President of the United States, a man with obvious dictatorial ambitions, has taken control of the police force in our nation’s capital.
He has deployed an active duty Military force against the citizens of Los Angeles, and is now doing the same against the citizens of Washington, D.C.
He has established a pattern of using the United States Military for the purposes of political distraction and intimidation.
And, unfortunately, it is all too clear this may not be the last time he does so.
Remember: Donald Trump claimed he had no authority to mobilize the National Guard to stop the assault on the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Any rationale stated today pales in comparison to the danger our nation faced four years ago. Today's action is political theater - nothing less.
His actions today are an effort to distract the public and the press, and to intimidate anyone he views as his opponent. It is a horrifying abuse of his power as Commander in Chief. He and every person in his administration should be embarrassed and ashamed at their actions.
VoteVets continues to stand in opposition to this administration, and it is critical that we have the support of our members.
