John,
Yesterday, the Israeli military intentionally targeted and killed at least five Palestinian journalists in an air strike on a media tent outside of Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza, including acclaimed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif.
This is yet another war crime and a deliberate attempt to silence the truth, as Israel continues to murder Palestinian journalists while banning international reporters from entering Gaza.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Israel has now killed at least 186 journalists in total since October 2023, accounting for 70 percent of the world’s journalist fatalities last year. Other sources like the United Nations say that figure is even higher, surpassing 242 casualties.
Experts at Brown University’s Watson School of International Affairs are calling it the worst conflict for reporters in modern times, with more media worker casualties than World Wars I and II, the Vietnam War, the Civil War, and the War in Afghanistan COMBINED.
This latest attack on the free press comes as Netanyahu moves to rapidly expand Israel’s military occupation to a full takeover of Gaza. We cannot look away, John. And Congress cannot continue to enable this.
In solidarity,
