John, We’ve got to be crystal clear about what’s happening right now: The White House is orchestrating a coordinated attack to steal power away from voters. Their latest move? White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller, went on Fox News claiming that Democrats “rigged” the 2020 Census by including undocumented immigrants — and that states like Massachusetts and California are an “ocean of fraud and abuse.” Has Stephen Miller even read the Constitution? The census has been responsible for counting every person — regardless of their immigration status — since its inception in 1790. His calling for a “correction” to the census is nothing but a blatant power grab and an attack on a centuries-old democratic process.
Counting every resident is a cornerstone of the census process that has existed for centuries. It’s how we determine fair representation in Congress and the distribution of federal resources. We’ve seen this story before, when Trump tried to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. But the power of this fair maps movement came together and was able to stop him in the courts. But what we’re seeing now is a full-court press to suppress the will of voters. Already, Trump and his allies have their sights set on extreme gerrymanders in Texas and Ohio, and potentially other states like Indiana and Missouri. Now it’s clear that the Trump team wants to sabotage an accurate census count, too — for the exact same reason. They want to fundamentally alter how we allocate representation in America — to amass unchecked power for themselves. This is a time to sound the alarm. Thank you for helping during this critical time. — Team NDRC
