About a month ago, the GOP’s cruel, immoral, and disastrous budget passed Congress and was signed into law by Donald Trump.
They said it would help working families – it doesn’t.
They said it was about tax relief – it’s not. (Unless you’re a billionaire.)
They said it was about border security – it’s definitely not making us any more secure. Instead, it increases funds for Trump’s unaccountable ICE raids that have been terrorizing our neighbors and immigrant communities.
And now the consequences are hitting home here in California:
→ Up to 1.4 million Californians will lose Medi-Cal coverage
→ Over 3 million California families will lose food assistance under new restrictions
→ Families still eligible for SNAP will lose $146/month on average
→ 5.5 million kids on Medi-Cal will face tighter eligibility requirements and potentially lose their coverage entirely
Meanwhile, the top 0.1% of earners are getting a massive tax break.
Research shows that Medicaid and SNAP are two of the strongest ladders out of poverty, but Trump and the GOP just slashed them with this new legislation.
Here’s the bottom line: this law will force one of the largest wealth transfers in U.S. history – taking from working families and giving to the ultra-rich.
Now, more children, seniors, and people with disabilities will go hungry because Republicans wanted to fund a tax break for billionaires.
Call me crazy, but unlike my Republican colleagues, I believe that having good health care, being able to put healthy food on the table, and securing safe, affordable housing should all be within reach for everyone.
But now, the goal post for achieving the American Dream has been moved even further away from regular people.
The only way to fight back against all of this in a meaningful way is to kick the GOP out of the majority and retake it for Democrats – so I’m hyperfocused on helping make that happen.
