Lawsuit Update: Stopping the Everglades Detention Center in Florida
In June, Earthjustice, representing Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, filed a federal lawsuit to stop a dangerous and unlawful plan to build a massive immigration detention center in the heart of the Florida Everglades.
This week, Earthjustice and our partners asked a Florida judge to halt the construction and operation of this facility with a temporary restraining order. The judge ruled in our favor and new construction must stop for 14 days while the court considers our motion for a more lasting preliminary injunction.
There are many reasons to oppose this detention center on moral grounds — first and foremost is the abject cruelty of the project. However, the legal basis of our lawsuit rests on environmental grounds. This project puts a mass of people, vehicles, and development in one of the most significant wetlands in the world. The proposed site — the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport — is surrounded by Big Cypress National
Preserve and sits on land that is more than 96% wetlands. It’s home to endangered wildlife like the Florida panther and lies within one of the most iconic and ecologically vital ecosystems on Earth.
This development would devastate fragile habitat, jeopardize decades of taxpayer-funded restoration efforts, and is being pursued without the legally required environmental review and opportunity for public input. .

Lawsuit Filed: Challenging Trump EPA’s Dangerous Decision to Delay Oil and Gas Methane Pollution Protections
Earthjustice is part of a coalition of 12 health, environmental, and community groups that are taking the Trump administration to court for delaying critical methane pollution protections. These standards, which have been in place for over a year, cut toxic emissions, prevent energy waste, and protect public health by requiring measures like leak detection and repair. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced a delay of up to 18 months without offering any public input. We’re fighting back against this unlawful move that threatens public health and the climate.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, over 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, and is a major contributor to climate change. The EPA itself estimates that delaying these protections will lead to an increase of millions of tons of methane and other air toxics over the next decade. These pollutants worsen extreme weather, harm public health, and result in billions of dollars in wasted natural gas. Although many oil and gas producers — and major energy-producing states — support the existing rules, the Trump EPA is now allowing more pollution by stalling enforcement without proper public process. Our lawsuit aims to restore these vital protections and hold the administration accountable.

Lawsuit Filed: Urging the EPA to intervene in Syracuse’s ongoing lead water crisis
Syracuse is experiencing one of the worst lead poisoning rates in the country. 2024 tests revealed dangerously high levels in the city’s drinking water, yet city and state officials have failed to take meaningful action to protect residents.
Earthjustice partnered with Families for Lead Freedom Now, the New York Civil Liberties Union, Legal Services of Central New York, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, to file a legal petition urging the EPA to intervene in Syracuse’s ongoing lead water crisis. The petition asks the EPA to force Syracuse to declare a state of emergency, provide water filters, launch public education on lead contamination, and involve the community in a plan to remove lead hazards, especially in the most affected neighborhoods.
Despite evidence showing widespread lead contamination, Syracuse’s testing methods have been criticized for underreporting the severity of the crisis. More than 14,000 homes are at risk, and the city’s recent test results have been questioned by experts. Lead poisoning poses severe health risks, especially to children. We are calling on federal, state, and local leaders to work with the community to ensure urgent and transparent action to end the crisis.

Lawsuit Filed: Challenging the EPA’s Latest Attack on Clean Air Protections
Steel mills are among the worst polluters in the U.S., releasing more than 300 tons of toxic metals into the air each year. But last month, the EPA pushed back the deadline for them to comply with pollution standards until April 2027 — two years later than originally planned. Earthjustice, representing community groups in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, went to court to challenge this reckless decision.
This delay means communities near these mills will continue to be exposed to dangerous pollutants like lead, arsenic, and other emissions linked to increased risks of cancer, lung disease, heart problems, and developmental issues in children. The EPA made this decision without public input, violating its duty to protect public health and the environment.
Earthjustice’s Senior Attorney Adrienne Lee emphasized that delaying these protections is especially harmful to vulnerable communities already suffering from pollution. We are urging the EPA to reconsider its decision and enforce stricter pollution controls without further delay.
