The Quad Cities are a pretty special place to call home. We’re a big, diverse and vibrant community that stretches across two states, separated only by the Mississippi River. If it wasn’t for the signage welcoming you to Illinois or Iowa, you wouldn’t know we were two states at all – it’s why I like to call our community “Quad Cities, USA.”

Unfortunately, though, in recent years it seems that the river between the two sides has grown a little wider – literally.

Flooding season on the Mississippi just passed and in Iowa, downtown areas flooded, streets were closed, and businesses had to shutter. I wish this was a one-off, but climate change has caused flooding like this to become an annual tradition, but not on both sides.

You see, in Illinois, Democratic leaders took action. We funded and built a series of flood walls to protect our communities, businesses, and homes from what our neighbors experience across the river.

The divide, unfortunately, doesn’t end there.

The two sides of the Quad Cities are even being separated by the rights we have. In Illinois, a woman’s right to choose is protected in the state constitution, but just last week in Iowa, extremists leaders put into effect a 6-week abortion ban, stripping away a woman’s right to choose before most women even know they are pregnant.

Divisions like these are happening all over the country because extremist politicians are flooding governments with dangerous legislation, while ignoring the basic needs of their communities. We need fewer extremist politicians and more common-sense leaders who want to look after their neighbors, protect their community, and respect the rights of everyone.
