Hi John,
You already know that the governor general costs taxpayers boat loads of cash.
It’s outrageous to force Canadians to pay for luxury perks handed out to a ceremonial figurehead.
Now a new Leger poll confirms what you’ve known all along. Nearly half of Canadians say the governor general’s budget is too big and needs to be cut.
Thanks to the support of CTF donors like you, we commissioned this poll to get hard data on what taxpayers think about funding the governor general’s lavish lifestyle.
Here’s what the poll found:
- 49% want to cut the governor general’s budget
- 19% would keep it the same
- 13% want to increase it
- 19% are unsure
Among Canadians with an opinion, 60% support cutting the budget.
The media picked up on the results. The Toronto Sun featured this: ''When families are struggling with rising prices, it’s wrong to rubber‑stamp budget increases for a completely ceremonial office.''
Canadians are waking up. As they struggle with rising costs, the Governor General keeps living the high life, on the taxpayers’ dime.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says he wants to cut program spending. You are turning up the pressure this fall to make sure big spending at Rideau Hall is on the chopping block.
If you’re one of the many Canadians who think these perks need to end, adding your name to the petition is one way to help turn up the pressure.
Everyone who signs becomes part of a taxpayer army demanding accountability and pushing Ottawa to act. That taxpayer army makes politicians shake in their boots.
Will you sign the petition to cut the Governor General’s perks?
We, the undersigned, call on the federal government to rein in governor general perks.

Even before this poll, supporters like you made it clear that this was one of the issues that you were most passionate about. In our recent survey about the Teddy Waste Awards, so many of you wrote in to suggest the Governor General’s expenses that it flooded our inbox!
Every week, I hear from Canadians who are exhausted. They’re working 50 hours a week, struggling to stay afloat. Then they find out their money is paying for royal treatment at Rideau Hall.
This poll gives them hope. You give them hope.
Thank you for standing up for taxpayers. Your voice is making a difference.
