Republicans across the country are bending the knee to Trump and national Republican leadership and exploring mid-decade redistricting where they can manipulate the maps in their favor before next year’s elections. From tariffs to the passing of the Big Bad Bill, they know their party is extraordinarily unpopular, so they are doing everything they can to steal power from the people.

Texas’s special legislative session is at a critical moment. Republicans proposed a new, even more gerrymandered map that could give Republicans five additional House seats. And several Democrats have left the state to prevent the legislature from reaching the quorum it needs to vote on this extreme map.

The proposed map divides communities of color and packs Black and Latino voters into as few districts as possible, essentially reducing the number of districts in which they are able to elect a candidate of their choice.

Make no mistake: This is about grabbing power for Trump and Republicans by taking power away from people of color. Plain and simple.
