Hi John, this is Rep. Delia Ramirez.
If you are on social media, you may have recently seen right-wing forces from the MAGA coalition coming after me with vicious attacks rooted in xenophobia and racism.
I wanted to write to you today to let you know how I am fighting back. Because these aren’t just attacks against me — they are attacks against our entire movement.
Last week, the right-wing took an acknowledgement I made of my Guatemalan roots — and the pride I feel as a Guatemalan American — and twisted it into a false narrative.
These right wing forces, including the Department of Homeland Security, weaponized a misinterpretation of my comments, made in Spanish, to try and question my loyalty as an American.
They even went so far as to call on me to be removed from my committees, stripped of my citizenship, and deported — a ridiculous attack meant only to rile up the far-right.
Far-right extremists with narrow, exclusionary views of America often take offense when someone who looks like me speaks with pride about her heritage. Because here’s the truth: the very existence of a member of Congress like me threatens their entire worldview.
I am a proud daughter of immigrants, who has unapologetically advocated for housing as a human right and healthcare for all — first as a social service provider, then as a state representative, and now as a congresswoman.
My entire life and political work has been about uplifting working class people of every background. I fight for all of us.
That’s exactly why they are targeting me as we continue to push back against this fascist administration.
When the right wing seeks to divide us using race, ethnicity, and the roots we hold dear, they need to know that we will always fight back.
I hope you’ll stand with me now against these hateful attacks, and show them we will never back down in our fight for the inclusive vision of America we’re building together.
Together, we will keep speaking the truth — proudly.
In Solidarity,
Rep. Delia Ramirez
Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District
