I’ve been thinking a lot recently, John.

I've been thinking of all the ways Democrats need to do better. We need to listen more, we need to meet our voters where they are at, show up better in our communities, and get to know the people we’re serving, their hopes, their fears, and see how we can help. But a huge thing we've been doing wrong is not showing what we stand for, only what we're fighting against.

So here are my guiding lights, and what I'm fighting FOR in Congress:

EVERY American has a right to affordable and quality health care coverage. In the richest country in the world, it's unacceptable that folks cannot afford to go to the doctor. It’s unacceptable that people are working multiple jobs to afford their prescriptions. It’s unacceptable that seniors are rationing their grocery budgets to afford health care. I wrote the Health Care Affordability Act with my constituents facing those issues top of mind.

Abortion is a human right. That’s why I voted for key legislation to codify Roe and protect our access to contraception. The extreme right is on a mission to roll our rights decades back and attack reproductive freedom — making all of us less free.

No child should fear for their life at school. No one should fear a mass shooting at their job. Weapons of war don’t belong in our neighborhoods. I secured $25 million to study gun violence as a public health issue, the first federal research into gun violence in more than two decades.

It's past time we addressed the disparities in maternal health. That's why I co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus and wrote the Momnibus , a collection of 13 bills to address every driver of maternal mortality, morbidity, and disparities in the United States. 80% of Maternal Deaths are preventable – women and families deserve to live to raise their children.
