I met with the team at Mercer University’s South Georgia Healthy Start program, which helps expectant mothers get the care they need, reduces pregnancy-related deaths, and gives babies a stronger, healthier start to life.
It’s not just a program — it’s a lifeline. And now, it’s on the chopping block. The President’s proposed budget eliminates funding for Healthy Start. I intend to oppose that because I won’t stand by while a vital program is dismantled during a maternal health crisis.
Here in Georgia, we already face some of the worst maternal health outcomes in the country. According to the March of Dimes, from 2018 to 2022, 32.1 mothers died for every 100,000 births — a staggering number that makes Georgia one of the most dangerous places to give birth in America.
