Weekend Reading
Hi Friend,
Since our founding during World War I, AFSC has worked to open hearts and communities to immigrants and refugees. Our work is rooted in our Quaker belief that all people have value and deserve to be treated with dignity. We spoke out against the racist U.S. Immigration Act of 1924. We worked to get Japanese Americans out of internment camps during World War II. We joined migrant farm workers organizing for their rights. And we supported the sanctuary movement in the 1980s.
Today, we continue working toward a world where all people have the chance to build good lives. A world that recognizes that immigrants make our communities stronger. Read more about our history. [link removed]
TAKE ACTION
Support the No Secret Police Act of 2025 [link removed]
Every person has the right to dignity and safety. But immigrants—and our communities as a whole—are less safe when confronted by armed ICE agents who do not identify themselves. That’s why we are calling on Congress to pass the No Secret Police Act of 2025. The bill would prohibit any immigration enforcement agents from wearing masks. Agents would also have to identify themselves and wear visible uniforms or insignias. Tell Congress to pass the No Secret Police Act now! [link removed]

Starvation is the norm in Gaza today [link removed]
By Yousef Aljamal
It has been over four months since Israel completely closed Gaza’s border crossings, preventing food and other aid from entering. Starvation and famine have spread. World leaders need to stop facilitating Israel’s genocide. And the U.S. government can do what other countries can’t. The U.S. must pressure Israel to open Gaza's borders and end the starvation of the Palestinian people. The people of Gaza simply can’t wait any longer. Read more. [link removed] (Politics Today)
Trump and Congress gave huge wins to corporate tax dodgers [link removed]
By Brett Heinz
While big corporations pay zero in taxes, working families carry the burden. One reason is that the Trump administration and Congress are helping companies hide their money in offshore tax havens. These policies benefit wealthy donors while hurting everyone else. It’s time to demand a fair tax system that works for all, not just the ultra-rich. (The Hill)
The U.S. made the mistake of nuclear war once—never again [link removed]
By Austin Headrick
This month marks 80 years since the U.S. dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Despite the lessons of this dark chapter of history, more countries are expanding their nuclear arsenals. And we are once again facing the threat of a nuclear arms race. The only world safe from nuclear war is one where nuclear weapons no longer exist. Today, we must recommit to preventing the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from happening again. (Common Dreams)
Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
