ACLU Supporter, what's happening in Texas right now is an undemocratic and blatantly partisan attempt by lawmakers to rig political power by targeting voters of color.
We the voters should choose our elected officials, not the other way around. But in Texas, the governor called for a mid-decade redistricting session in response to the president's demands. Rather than focusing on people's civil liberties and what Texans need after catastrophic flooding, legislators are using the session to prioritize their own political agendas at the expense of communities of color.
Let's be clear: They're undermining our regular democratic process to strip power away from Texas voters and lock in new congressional seats to rubber stamp President Trump's agenda.
Texas lawmakers left the state to break quorum and keep this harmful redistricting from proceeding – and in response, Governor Abbott threatened to arrest and even remove them from office. President Trump has sent the FBI to help track down these lawmakers in a blatant abuse of power. And now, the Texas Attorney General has filed to remove 13 of these democratically elected lawmakers from office.
These actions are nothing more than a power grab designed to manipulate election results, overrule everyday Texans, and lock in power at the expense of voters of color.
The Texas legislature's actions are dangerous for American democracy. If they're allowed to get away with this, it will drag other states into the same game, and voters and our democracy will be the losers.
Voters deserve better. Our Constitution demands it. We'll keep fighting this attack on voters – and fighting for all our civil liberties.
Thanks for being with us,
The ACLU Team
