Hi John --
Happy Pride Month!
Earlier this Pride month, the Supreme Court took a
significant step toward LGBTQ+ equality by ruling that federal law protects LGBTQ+ workers from discrimination in the workplace. And today marks 5 years since the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land with the Obergefell decision.
That’s incredible progress. But we still have such a long road to travel to secure
full equality for everyone under the law.
Because nationally, LGBTQ+ individuals remain unprotected from discrimination in housing, education, health care, and other public spaces. The Equality Act is stuck in Congress, another good and important bill sent to Mitch McConnell’s graveyard.
But we don't have to rely on the Supreme Court or Mitch McConnell to deliver change. Marriage equality was the law of the land in a number of states before it made it to the Supreme Court. Cities and states are passing laws to recognize and protect LGBTQ+ parents, address LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, ban conversion therapy, and more. And in many of those cities and states, Run for Something alum aren’t just supporting the fights -- they’re leading them.
If we elect progressives to school boards, they can make schools a safe place for LGBTQ+ kids. If we win city council and state legislative seats, we can ban discrimination against LGBTQ+ parents who want to foster or adopt. And if we want to undo centuries of institutionalized bigotry, we need to help elect LGBTQ+ candidates to office and support their efforts to secure equality.
So for Pride Month, if you’re able, please, chip in $5 or more to help us recruit and support young progressives who will keep up the fight for LGBTQ+ equality.
