August 14 CFT town hall at Fullerton College

All CFT members are invited to attend our upcoming town hall, set for next Thursday at Fullerton College. At the town hall members will have the opportunity to discuss how we can fight back against the growing threats to public education and our communities, and how a strong union is not just important, but essential in this struggle. Participants will be urged to share their thoughts on how we can all contribute to safeguarding public education, our rights, and our democracy.

The event will also feature Assembly Education Chair Al Muratsuchi, who is the author of three CFT-sponsored bills, UC-AFT member Christina Gagnier, who is a candidate for Congress in the district currently represented by Republican Young Kim, and Orange County Central Labor Council Executive Director Gloria Alvarado.

The event begins at 5:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. For more details and to RSVP, click here.

Welcoming new members to the union

Yesterday the Newport-Mesa Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1794 (pictured above), and the Poway Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 2357, welcomed dozens of new members to their respective unions during new employee orientations. For CFT President Jeff Freitas, who attended the Poway event, one of the highlights of his annual back to school tour is meeting new members and joining them in their excitement as their career begins.

“We want to make sure that from day one our new colleagues understand the power of the union to support them and protect our schools,” says Freitas. “With so many challenges and threats facing our schools, standing together is our best path forward. So make sure to take the time to reach out to new colleagues and let them know we have their back.”

As the CFT Back to School tour continues, CFT leaders will fan across the state next week for visits in San Francisco, San Mateo, Sunnyvale, and Newport Beach.

Major Labor Day rallies set for San Francisco and Los Angeles

At marches and rallies, picnics and parades, this Labor Day will be a celebration of working people across the country. A celebration of the power we have when we come together in a union—the power to take back our country for working people, not billionaires. The power to protect our communities and our rights against the threats from the growing authoritarianism in our country.

Throughout the state our Central Labor Councils will host a variety of events during the holiday weekend. As a union we will prioritize two key rallies in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Los Angeles march and rally will take place on Monday, September 1 with participants gathering at 8:00 a.m. at Broad and E. Street in Wilmington, for a 10:00 a.m. march to Banning Park, where a noontime rally and picnic will take place. You can find more details and RSVP here.

The San Francisco event will take place on Monday, September 1 with participants gathering at the intersection of 24th and Bryant Streets for an 11:00 a.m. march to Mission Dolores Park for a rally and fair. You can find more details and RSVP here.

Look for more details in the next few weeks on all CFT platforms.

Resources to support immigrant students

Immigration enforcement actions continue to impact our students, patients, and the communities we serve. That’s why AFT has developed new checklists to help educators and school support staff support families in creating a Family Immigration Emergency Plan. Having a family immigration emergency plan in place can help reduce stress, protect loved ones, ensure that children and family responsibilities are cared for, and makes the difference in keeping someone from being deported.
