Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
Last Friday, more than 13,000 young people in our city wrapped up their Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) placements across the city. And this week, thousands of rising 6th and 9th grade students participated in Summer Bridge, a week-long program designed to support students in their transition to middle and high school.
As we move closer toward the first day of school, I want to thank the thousands of adults in our city who have been working hard to keep kids and teens safely engaged – at MBSYEP placements, DPR summer camps, the DCPS Summer Enrichment Program, Late Night Hypes, and so much more.
With the school year fast approaching, it’s a good time to start saving the dates of back-to-school events happening citywide – opportunities to learn about the upcoming school year, pick up school supplies, and make sure your student has a healthy start to the school year:
* On Wednesday, August 20, DCPS families can join Chancellor Ferebee and DCPS leaders for a virtual information session on key updates for the upcoming school year [ [link removed] ].
* District agencies and community organizations are holding back-to-school giveaways at sites across the city, including at the 11th Annual Chuck Brown Day [ [link removed] ] on August 16.
* DC Health pediatric immunization sites [ [link removed](1).pdf ] are open across the city, and you can register now for the final DC Health Hub [ [link removed] ] of the season, on September 11.
Enjoy a few more Late Night Hypes [ [link removed] ] before summer ends, remember that free summer meal sites are open through August 24, and let’s close out summer strong and then have a successful start to the new school year.
Sincerely,
Muriel Bowser
