Good Evening Ward 8 Residents,
We want everyone to enjoy fireworks. However, please keep in mind, explosive fireworks and flying fireworks are illegal in the District of Columbia.
Just a few days ago, King Gas Station, located on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave caught fire allegedly due to improper use of fireworks. God spared us the outcome had the fire spread to the gas pumps.
Illegal fireworks are more than a neighborhood nuisance –– they are dangerous in the hands of children and young adults. Our office has received several complaints about fireworks. We have calls from residents explaining that the explosive fireworks are triggering their PTSD, keeping them up at night, and some so powerful that they are or physically shaking their homes.
Read the fireworks guidelines for our city. We ask you to celebrate safely while respecting others.

Fireworks Safety ()
** Prohibited
------------------------------------------------------------
Article 27, DC Register, F-2700.1.1: The manufacture, storage, display, sale, setting off, or discharge of any firework listed below is prohibited in the District of Columbia.
* Firecrackers of any kind or description
* Any firework that explodes, such as cherry bombs, salutes, Roman candles, floral shells, artillery shells
* Any firework intended to move after the piece is placed and fired; such as bottle rockets, parachutes, buzzbombs, pinwheels, helicopters, jumping jacks
* Sparklers more than 20 inches (50mm) in length
* Any firework that contains mercury, arsenic, tetryl, phosporous, sulphocyanide, magnesium, potassium picrate, gallic acid, chlorate of potash and sugar, or any highly oxidizing agent
* Any firework having a side fuse, or a fuse inserted at any point along the length of the firework
* Any firework found by the code official to be dangerous to the safety of persons or property
** Permitted

Article 27, District of Columbia Register, F-2700.1.2): The fireworks listed below are permitted to be stored, displayed, sold, delivered, used, and possessed in accordance with the provisions of this article.
* Any firework specifically excepted in this article
* Toy paper caps containing not more than twenty-five hundredths (0.25) of a grain of explosive composition per cap
* Sparklers not more than 20 inches (50mm) in length
* Torches, cones
* Box fires, fountains
* Dip-sticks, non-poisonous snakes
* Paper novelty items, colored lights

CLICK TO WATCH: Councilmember Trayon White brings a focus on the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) during the Committee of the Whole (COW), Committee Mark-up meeting.
"As the Councilmember for Ward 8, I am very familiar with the need to ensure that DCRA’s inspectors are available to inspect and cite bad actors. I agree with COW’s recommendation that DCRA conducts proactive and random inspection blitzes and inspect areas with a high volume of complaints. I also agree that DCRA must approve its business process to track bad actors and ensure compliance with fines, " stated Councilmember White.

IMPORTANT
Metro service plans for July 4, 2020
Metro announced service plans for July 4, 2020, including extended service at selected stations following the Salute to America fireworks display on the National Mall. While it is not known how many visitors will attend the event due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, all indications are that crowds will be much lighter than in past years. However, because the event may result in a modest increase in Metro’s ridership versus current levels, Metro will run more frequent trains and extend service beyond 9 p.m.. at designated stations closest to the National Mall.
