Greetings,
I hope this message finds you well. As your U.S. Representative for Georgia’s Thirteenth Congressional District, I am working hard to combat the Trump Administration’s attacks on healthcare, seniors, workers, and low-income families across our state. In just six months since taking office, the President’s reckless policies have sown confusion and chaos into the federal government’s most basic functions—creating a dangerous situation for millions of Georgians struggling to get ahead. I want to share some important updates with you from this past month on my efforts to fight back:
Fighting For Georgia Families
In July, I voted no on the Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill. This bill is a direct assault on human dignity. It slashes more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA. These cuts will kick more than 750,000 Georgians off their healthcare while raising premiums for 1.2 million.
Additionally, the bill cut $200 million from SNAP which means vulnerable children and seniors will go hungry. Even our veterans will not be immune to these cuts. I proposed an amendment that would have protected the work requirement exemptions for vulnerable veterans, but Republicans refused to even bring this up for a vote.
Demanding Accountability for Defrauded Georgia Investors
As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, I sent a letter to SEC Chair Paul Atkins demanding answers over the agencies failure to detect the $140 million dollar Ponzi scheme orchestrated by First Liberty Building and Loan. The collapse was a total failure of state oversight and federal regulatory supervision. The worst hit investors were not millionaires, they were retirees, faith leaders, and veterans who often invested their hard-earned funds under false promises. Many of these Georgians lost their entire retirement, life savings, and their feeling of financial security. That is why I called on the SEC to commit to a full and timely public report on how this Ponzi scheme was able to go unnoticed. Read More HERE.
Expanding Opportunities in Agriculture
I introduced the Black Farmers and Socially Disadvantaged Farmers Increased Market Share Act to expand market access for Black and historically disadvantaged minority farmers. My bill confronts longstanding discrimination inequities perpetuated under the U.S. Department of Agriculture by establishing food hub grants, new tax incentives, and directing USDA prioritize purchasing from socially disadvantaged farmers. Importantly, my bill establishes an independent Office of the Civil Rights Ombudsperson to assist farmers navigating the civil rights review process. This will ensure USDA is properly held accountable for discriminatory practices, harassment, retaliation, or civil rights-violating actions. Read More HERE.
Advocating for Georgia’s Native Communities
I recently wrote a letter to the Interior Department and Bureau of Indian Affairs urging them to federally recognize Georgia’s Tribe of Eastern Cherokee and Lower Muscogee Creek Tribe. Georgia’s Native American communities have been a vital part of our state’s history for over 1,000 years. Federal recognition would allow these tribes to access funding for Indian Health services, housing, education, jobs and economic development, and vital cultural preservation. Read More HERE.
Agriculture Committee
During a recent House Agriculture Committee hearing, I highlighted the severe impact of spotted wing drosophila (SWD) flies on Georgia’s $385 million blueberry and peach crops. I asked witnesses what Congress can do specifically to strengthen public-private partnerships to better equip farmers. As a senior member of the committee, I am working to ensure Congress advances legislation expanding public-private partnerships to develop innovative, non-chemical solutions for protecting our agriculture supply chain. Fighting for Women’s Reproductive Health
This month I introduced a measure designating the month of July as Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month. My proposal will bring national attention to one of the most common, yet overlooked, reproductive health conditions that impacts almost 26 million women in the United States. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors with debilitating symptoms that disproportionally impacts African American and Latina women. Congress must do more to recognize the disparity that exists among women of color and increase research funding to meet the needs of those impacted by uterine fibroids. Read More HERE.
Fighting to Close Georgia’s Digital Divide
I strongly oppose the Trump Administration’s unilateral termination of digital equity grants. That is why I sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick opposing the abrupt and illegal termination of these grants and demanded immediate disbursement of awards and approval of pending applications. Communities across Georgia count on the digital equity grants program for affordable internet connectivity. The program expands access to basic digital tools for telehealth services, education, and job opportunities. The termination of more than $2.75 billion in congressionally approved funding will disproportionately harm working class families with school-age kids, vets, the elderly, and rural Georgians. I am fighting to get these funds restored. Read More HERE.
