This week was the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act — the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement. The Voting Rights Act makes America a better nation by expanding and protecting voters’ access to the ballot, particularly voters of color.

But right now, its future is in danger. Sixty years after its passage and after decades of courts affirming it, the Supreme Court just announced it would consider whether the Voting Rights Act is constitutional.

In a moment when our democracy is under unprecedented, extreme electoral attacks, the most effective law at protecting the right to vote in American history is at risk. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for our movement.

You might remember that the Supreme Court decided to rehear Louisiana v. Callais, the case involving Louisiana’s congressional map. Originally, the map included just one Black-opportunity district out of the state’s six, despite the fact that African Americans make up one-third of the state of Louisiana. Two years ago, the same Supreme Court ruled in Allen v. Milligan that a similar map in Alabama was in violation of the Voting Rights Act — prompting a lower court to order Louisiana to redraw its map to include two Black-opportunity districts.

Now the Supreme Court wants to take another look, announcing it wants to consider whether the redrawn, fairer map violates the 14th Amendment rights of non-Black citizens. Put another way, we will soon see arguments in front of the highest court in the land that the Voting Rights Act itself is unconstitutional.

For anti-democracy extremists, this is their end goal: To gut the Voting Rights Act and run rampant with gerrymandering. They’re actively fighting this on all fronts — from redrawing Texas’s already-gerrymandered maps to gutting the Voting Rights Act through the courts.
