John,
August recess might be the longest congressional break of the year (and Speaker Mike Johnson made it an extra-long one this year), but your CT delegation must have missed the memo.
While we’re seeing GOP House members hitting the golf course or cruising around on their boats, our delegation is out in communities, holding press conferences, attending town halls, and standing up for Connecticut values.
Here’s a round-up of their recent actions: -
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and Reps. John Larson and Joe Courtney, joined Governor Lamont in a news conference in Hartford condemning Donald Trump’s executive order criminalizing homelessness. Making clear the entire delegation stands united against Trump’s unconstitutional and inhumane political stunt. Connecticut Democrats made it clear that in our state, we choose compassion, not cruelty.
-
Rep. Rosa DeLauro published an op-ed yesterday in the CT Insider to call out Republicans’ so-called “Child Tax Credit Expansion”. She details how in practice, this tax credit will leave one in three children behind. While the GOP is gutting poverty reduction programs, Rep. DeLauro is sponsoring the American Family Act to establish a refundable child tax credit with a monthly advance payment.
-
Joining Rep. DeLauro in that fight, Rep. Jahana Hayes co‑led efforts to preserve critical supports for students’ mental health across Connecticut. Together, they are pushing back against attempts to strip $1 billion in mental health resources from schools.
-
Sen. Chris Murphy is not relaxing this recess. He’s been hitting the road, hosting town halls in Arizona, North Carolina, and most recently in Ohio, where he joined forces with Rep. Maxwell Frost to answer tough questions from voters on healthcare, education, and the GOP’s harmful cuts.
-
Rep. Jim Himes is busy this recess fighting for facts. As the top-ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, he’s calling out Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. On Face the Nation last month, he denounced her claims about the 2016 election as a “dangerous lie,” and defended the integrity of our intelligence institutions.
While Republicans treat August recess like a vacation, Connecticut Democrats are treating it like a responsibility. They’re showing up, holding lawmakers accountable, and doing the work their constituents elected them to do. That’s the kind of leadership we work for, and that’s the kind of leadership you’re supporting year-round. Sincerely,
