The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to repeal critical protections that limit mercury and other toxic air pollution from fossil fuel-fired power plants.
These safeguards, known as the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), have reduced mercury emissions by more than 90% and helped save thousands of lives. Repealing them would let polluters off the hook and put our health at risk.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. Even small amounts can harm brain development in babies and young children. Fossil fuel-fired power plants are currently the largest source of mercury pollution in the country.
Weakening these protections would allow more toxic pollution into the air we breathe, the water we drink, and threaten the Great Lakes.
Communities in the Midwest and across the country have fought hard for these protections. Undoing them now would erase years of progress and leave the most vulnerable people less protected. EPA must hear from the public before this dangerous repeal moves forward.
