United States: President Donald Trump’s latest wave of tariffs officially began Thursday, hitting imports from more than 90 countries with new rates ranging from 10% to 41%.
Just minutes before the deadline, Trump celebrated the move online, posting in all caps:
“It’s midnight!!! Billions of dollars in tariffs are now flowing into the United States of America.”
The White House says the tariffs will strengthen US manufacturing and rebalance the economy. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick predicts they could bring in $50 billion each month.
But JPMorgan warns that 60% of these costs will likely be passed directly to consumers, meaning higher prices on many everyday products. The Budget Lab at Yale estimates Americans will now pay an average of 18.3% more for imported goods — the steepest rate since 1934.
