Dear Friend,

Climate change is a major threat to American lives and livelihoods, and yet the Trump administration is abdicating its responsibility to protect us from that threat.

Our climate, health, ecosystems, and laws are all interconnected — and so is our legal work. Earthjustice is fighting to force the government to uphold its responsibility to address the causes of climate change and improve our resilience to climate disasters.

Read on to see how flooding, Trump’s rollback of the endangerment finding, and our class action lawsuit to protect EPA grants are linked — and how you can join us in this fight.

The Human Toll of Climate Change

Last year’s dramatic flooding in North Carolina was a harbinger of things to come — and this year tragedy struck in Texas, killing 137 people.

Flash flooding from increasingly intense storms is one of the most deadly and destructive consequences of climate change.

Flooding is just one avenue of climate-intensified destruction: wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, extreme heat, and tornadoes are all becoming more severe.

Urgent action is needed, and the first step is properly assessing the harm of climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

The Trump Administration Abandons Responsibility

In 2009, the EPA adopted the “endangerment finding.” This bedrock ruling declared that greenhouse gasses are harmful because they contribute to warming the planet, thus requiring the EPA to regulate them in accordance with the Clean Air Act.

The link between greenhouse gasses and climate change is settled scientific fact. So is the harmful impact of climate change. And yet, Trump’s EPA declared it would rescind the rule, kneecapping the government’s ability to address this driver of climate change while Americans suffer the consequences.

There is a comment and review period before the decision is finalized. Once it is, Earthjustice will take this administration to court to defend the endangerment finding and the critical greenhouse gas emissions standards that rely on it.

Earthjustice Sues to Protect Climate Resiliency

Climate change is already here. Cutting emissions to minimize future warming is essential, and we must also invest in resilience today. The Trump administration is doing the opposite, doubling down on its climate denial by defunding grants intended to improve community climate resilience.

In total, Trump’s EPA cancelled 350 environmental justice grants.

Earthjustice filed our first-ever class action lawsuit against the Trump administration in June, aiming to restore funding for the grants.

These grants range from addressing toxic air pollution to helping communities respond to climate disaster.

In Jackson, Mississippi, a local nonprofit was awarded a $20 million grant to build a community resiliency hub that would be capable of sheltering 150 people during national disasters and periods of extreme heat.

Forty-seven projects included planting trees to mitigate extreme heat and improve stormwater retention. Hundreds more addressed specific needs for communities affected by pollution and climate change. Taken together, they represented the largest investment in environmental justice in U.S. history. As extreme weather events increase in frequency and severity, these investments are more necessary than ever.

How to Fight for Climate Action and Resilience

We face a federal government hostile to climate action. Our challenge is to fight the Trump administration head on, while pursuing progress in the states, in utility commissions, in the courts, locally, and internationally.

You can read our latest Victory Report to see what we’ve achieved in the last few weeks. We can still win, we will keep fighting, and we need you with us for the long haul.

We are facing the most anti-climate administration in modern history — one that is abdicating its responsibility to protect us from the dangers of climate change. We’ll fight back in every available avenue, supported by our clients, partners, advocates, and donors.

Thank you for being in this fight with us.

Sincerely,
The Team at Earthjustice
