As floodwaters rise in north-eastern Bangladesh, so do the overwhelming obstacles to getting lifesaving care to women and girls.

In climate-vulnerable areas, floods threaten 670,000 women’s access to sexual and reproductive health care. Adapting to climate disasters is not a choice, but a matter of survival.

“I was eight months pregnant during the last flood,” Ms. Akhter , a 24-year-old mother of two, told UNFPA. “We took shelter for three days with only the essentials.”

Any disruption in care poses a threat to the lives and well-being of mothers and their babies. This is why climate shocks in Bangladesh have led women like Shakila Begum to seek creative solutions.

As the first point of contact for 75 local families, Ms. Begum provides guidance on issues such as family planning and maternal healthcare — with flood preparation at the center. For mothers like Ms. Akhter, this training could save her and her family’s lives.

“Thanks to the training I received, I knew what to carry, how to prepare, and how to protect my family.” Ms. Akhter told us. But despite these efforts, challenges remain. In flood-prone villages across Bangladesh, over half of deliveries still occur at home.

The vulnerabilities that women and girls face are only exacerbated by climate disasters. Improving resilience to climate change must be a pillar of humanitarian response in vulnerable regions like Bangladesh.

UNFPA is bringing the resources and guidance needed to strengthen climate resilience, but improving preparedness, response time, and the future of women and girls in Bangladesh and beyond depends on supporters like you. Please, make a lifesaving gift right now to deliver critical services and training to women, girls, mothers, and their babies. [[link removed]?]
