@nppef August 6th marks the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. It was a landmark victory of the Civil Rights Movement, tearing down barriers like literacy tests and poll taxes that kept Black communities away from the ballot.
However, the struggle isn't over. Every generation has a role in protecting the vote. How can you honor the legacy of those before us? ✔️ Stay informed about your local politics ✔️ Vote in every election #SuperVoter ✔️ Advocate for fair access to the polls ✔️ Encourage friends and family to vote ✔️ Share this info!

Elections have consequences; the number of restrictive voter laws enacted this year increased by 50 percent. In 2025, we’ve seen a significant shift in the makeup of election laws enacted by state legislatures. Since 2021, each year saw more than twice as many new laws expanding access to the ballot as new laws restricting it. That trend ended this year, with only one in three new laws improving voter access and election administration in 2025, the lowest percentage we’ve ever recorded. - Last Monday, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that private citizens have no standing to sue for disability-based violations of the Voting Rights Act of 1965—the landmark federal legislation which protects, among other things, the right to voting assistance for disabled people and voters with low English literacy.
-
In May of this year, the Eighth Circuit held that private citizens can no longer sue under Section 2. Only the Department of Justice can enforce voting rights laws, and if the DOJ chooses not to, there’s no one left to stop voter suppression.
-
Last September, a district judge overturned a law in Alabama that made it a felony to assist people in requesting and voting with absentee ballots.
Pennsylvania is one of only 7 states that voters have the ability to elect ALL their judges and justices in partisan election. Your voice matters! Make a plan today to vote in the judicial elections this November. |

Senate, Rejecting Whistle-Blower Alarms, Confirms Bove to Appeals Court
The Trump loyalist ,was narrowly approved as Republicans brushed aside concerns about his conduct as a senior Justice Department official.
“Kadida Kenner, CEO of the New Pennsylvania Project and co-chair of Why Courts Matter – Pennsylvania, said that Bove is ‘unfit for the bench’ and that she worries that the court’s new makeup means the outcome of a similar election case will be different next time.

If the state budget paralysis in Harrisburg continues much longer, Pennsylvanians with real problems will be the first to feel the pain, advocates for county governments and human services say.
That means nearly $530 million in payments would be delayed for programs including rape crisis centers, child support enforcement, behavioral health services, county and municipal health departments, maternal and child health, opioid response and Area Agencies on Aging, according to a letter to health and human services providers from the Shapiro administration’s top budget official.
“I understand that part of politics is like a game of cards sometimes … but this is really dangerous when you’re playing with people’s lives,” Northampton County Commissioner Lori Vargo Heffner said. “Is it a child who gets abused? Is it an elder who gets neglected?” |
