John,
Reddit calls itself "the front page of the internet" -- it has more than 1.5 billion visitors a month!
But it's also the front page for online hate, providing anonymous cover for white supremacists who have inspired real-world killing sprees.
Now active Reddit users are speaking out, calling the company’s Black Lives Matter support “hypocritical” and demanding the platform immediately ban racist language and behavior.
Let's help them turn up the heat and take away this platform for dangerous, hateful racists:
Reddit: ban racist language and behavior, now!
This is a long-standing problem. In 2015, the Southern Poverty Law Center called Reddit out as home to “the most violently racist” content on the internet. Now the company is speaking out in support of Black Lives Matter protests — but doing nothing to change its policy.
And it’s setting off a firestorm. Reddit’s co-founder just stepped down from the board to be replaced by a Black person, and another former CEO has called Reddit out for monetizing white supremacy. It's also facing a rebellion of its most important users, with over 300 of its moderators writing an open letter to the company.
Reddit has shown before it will listen to complaints about pages on its site. If we act fast, we can help give this the final push it needs — let’s shut down this safe space for hate:
Reddit: ban racist language and behavior, now!
Websites like Reddit are visited by billions of people. They shouldn’t provide safe harbour to racist, hateful views. It shouldn’t be up to us to push these platforms to take better care of our shared online spaces, but if they won’t act — let’s show them we will.
