Executive Order Blocks Debanking
Yesterday, the White House issued an Executive Order limiting financial institutions’ ability to use “reputational risk” or involvement in “lawful” industries to restrict financial services. It requires institutions to review and potentially reinstate accounts previously closed or denied due to “politicized or unlawful debanking.” This is welcome news for anyone in the industry — and bad news for those who use banking as a form of censorship. For the past three years, Free Speech Coalition has been in D.C. meeting with lawmakers to highlight how debanking harms sex workers. There’s still more work to do, but this is a major victory in the fight against financial discrimination.

Alabama Notifying Adult Sites Of New Tax Set To Take Effect Sept. 1
Starting September 1, Alabama will add a 10% tax to all adult content sales made by state residents. Opponents say the law is a targeted and unconstitutional attack on free expression, but following the Supreme Court’s ruling in FSC v. Paxton, its legal future is uncertain. “Before the ruling, I would’ve said even a conservative court would strike it down,” said FSC Executive Director Alison Boden, “but in a post-Paxton world… it’s unclear.” Read more on XBIZ.
