Monica Morin has no dreams of living in Arlington long-term. “That would be futile,” she said, “especially with the Amazon effect on the market.”
Monica is a Virginia Beach native who moved to Arlington in 2013. She worked at Dulles but wanted to be closer to D.C. in hopes of finding a different job. Two years ago she landed a position at American University. She’s a full time senior administrative assistant, supporting faculty and students, managing a budget, executing events, and handling scheduling for five majors and six minors.
Her first paycheck of the month covers the rent with just $70 left over. She moonlights at Trader Joe’s in Clarendon to help cover expenses.

Join us for drinks and a chance to hear from Wilma Jones, author of "My Halls Hill Family: More than a Neighborhood." Wilma is a fourth-generation Arlingtonian whose book chronicles the history of a historically African-American community that began in 1850 when Bazil Hall purchased 327 acres of land for a plantation. The Color of Housing: The History of Racism in Housing in Arlington

Join us for an interactive program on the Federal Housing Administration’s mid-20th century use of redlining to prevent loans to Black people in selected areas. Using local maps and stories, local nonprofit Challenging Racism will show how these practices affected Arlington by locking in segregated housing and influencing housing patterns today.
