I remember January 6th like it was yesterday.
After I left the House floor, after I knew my colleagues and my staff were safe, I had a lot on my mind.
First, I was thinking about how important it was that we get back to work and certify the election.
Second, I wanted to make sure the people who stormed the Capitol that day would face consequences.
We made a lot of progress on that — until Trump retook office. One of the first things he did was pardon all of the January 6ers, and then he put an end to all January 6 prosecutions.
All of those guys are free thanks to Trump. Many of them have reoffended and are back in prison — proof that Trump endangered the public by putting these people back on the street.
It gets even worse though. If you can believe it, a J6er is working at the Department of Justice now. A guy who called the police “Gestapo” “Nazis” and yelled “KILL ‘EM” over and over again as those cops were getting pushed, punched, kicked, and spit on is taking a taxpayer funded salary as a senior adviser at the Department of Justice.
I’ll admit it: this really pisses me off. It’s hard to take. I remember what it was like standing on the House floor with nothing but a pen to defend myself with. Rioters banging on the doors. Not to mention having to stomach “Back the Blue” from MAGA after they abandoned the Capitol Police who defended us.
But I was ready to fight that day, same as I was out on patrol as a Marine in Iraq. I’m still fighting, even if it looks a bit different now.
I’m doing whatever I can to hold Trump and his administration accountable in the Senate. I’m going up on TV, radio, podcasts, magazines, newspapers and anyone else that’ll listen to raise the alarm about everything Trump’s doing. And I’m travelling the country to speak directly to people who really need to hear it.
If we’re going to win elections in 2026 we need to make the case against Trump now. That’s what I’m doing.
