When Trump froze $230 million of federal funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, our Democratic leaders went right to work.

After weeks of pressure, demanding the Trump Administration restore funding for our schools, our after school programs, adult education, enrichment, and more — we scored a victory! Billions of education funding will be released!

But here’s the underlying issue: this is a victory we shouldn’t have needed to fight for. This was Congressionally-appropriated funding owed to us — and Trump’s attempt to freeze it was unlawful. Our school districts across Pennsylvania were unnecessarily sent into a scramble, making hasty plans to cut programs and staff. This is the kind of instability that disrupts how our education administrators and teachers are able to plan for our kids.

That’s why we have to elect Democrats up and down the ballot this November and next year in the midterms. We need to build up a blue wave so that we aren’t just playing defense against attacks like this. Securing blue seats in our local, state, and federal governments means we’ll be able to go on the offense with policy that serves hardworking Pennsylvanian families.
