👋 Hi John! Happy Thursday. We made it to the end of the week!
We are happy to bring you The People’s Bi-Weekly Watchdog Newsletter, delivered to your inbox every other Thursday. We bring you the news you need to know to hold power accountable from the nonpartisan source you can trust.
This week’s Common Cause newsletter is just a 3.5 minute read at 570 words.
💪🏽 60 Years of The Voting Rights Act
This week, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA), marking a pivotal moment in U.S. history. The VRA was a direct response to the widespread disenfranchisement of Black voters — it was a law that changed lives, allowing everyday Americans to exercise their right to vote without fear or discrimination.
Sixty years in, the battle for voting rights rages on. As we mark this significant milestone, we recognize that communities of color still face substantial barriers to fully engaging in the democratic process. The promise of the VRA remains unfulfilled for too many Americans, and it is not enough on its own to secure our voting rights.
This moment serves as a reminder that we must not become complacent. The right to vote is under constant threat. That’s why Common Cause is calling for:
The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will restore the full protections of the VRA
The Freedom to Vote Act, which will expand voting options and ensure we all have a voice
Action in state legislatures to remove modern barriers to the polls
At Common Cause, we work at the forefront of the fight to protect and expand voting rights across the nation. As a nonpartisan organization dedicated to creating a democracy that works for everyone, this issue is at the heart of our mission. Common Cause remains dedicated to fighting these injustices.

📊 By the numbers
ICE says it's going after “violent criminals.” But the truth? Less than 1% of deportees had murder convictions. They’re tearing apart families, not protecting public safety.
