Coming Changes to CBC - Wisconsinisms Explained

Wisconsin DSPS is offering two training opportunities for building industry professionals ahead of changes to the state’s Commercial Building Code (CBC), which establishes standards for commercial buildings in the state, including multi-family residential buildings.

The training webinars will be:

Each webinar will be led by DSPS staff and is expected to last approximately 5-6 hours. It will also be recorded and available for viewing afterward on the DSPS YouTube page [ [link removed] ].

The new CBC will take effect on September 1, when the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau publishes the new, upgraded code. Through this update, Wisconsin will move to the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) standards with some Wisconsin-specific adjustments, known in the industry as Wisconsinisms.

DSPS will also accept plans submitted under the current (2015) code through the month of September.

Starting October 1, all commercial building plans submitted to DSPS for approval must meet the standards set in the upgraded code. Any supplemental sub-submissions to DSPS (such as fire suppression/alarm, HVAC, boilers, elevators, refrigeration) must be aligned with the code under which the commercial building plan was approved, regardless of how many months later they follow.

The department will follow the past practice of providing “yellow sheet” inserts for IBC books with numbered pages that help professionals know which 2021 IBC standards have been altered by a Wisconsinism.

DSPS is also updating relevant licensing exam questions and plans to have exams updated to reflect standards in the new CBC starting October 1.
