John,
Last week, two important things happened in the NC General Assembly:
First (SB 50): NC House lawmakers did NOT override Governor Stein’s veto on the Permitless Carry bill, SB 50, meaning it did not become law. This is great news! Take a minute to celebrate wherever you are - and then we need to get back to pressuring lawmakers. Why? Because lawmakers return to Raleigh later this month, and may try to override the veto then. Sign up for our August volunteer meeting to organize and speak out!

Why is organizing right now so important? Lawmakers are receiving intense pressure from the gun lobby to override the veto on SB 50. We have less than 3 weeks to build our own pressure to make sure that House members do not fold to the gun lobby the way they did on HB 193. The pressure has worked on SB 50 so far - come to the meeting to learn how to keep it up.
Second (HB 193): Despite loud statewide opposition and the voices of many NCGV supporters like you, lawmakers overrode House Bill 193, which allows some people to carry concealed loaded handguns in private schools. Every single House Republican and one House Democrat voted to put NC kids at private schools at risk. We fought. HARD. Together, we called hundreds of voters, went door-to-door, held an event in a key area where we knew the lawmaker was on the fence, advocated at the General Assembly, blasted our message on social media, emailed our lawmakers, and had letters to the editor published state-wide. Thank you for advocating. Our voices mattered. While we did lose, we managed to flip several lawmakers from abstaining from voting prior to the veto to sustaining (i.e. voting with) the Governor's veto on the override vote, proving that minds and votes can be changed. We need to apply this same pressure on Permitless Carry, which we know lawmakers from both parties view as much more extreme and dangerous. THAT is where we can win, and we are counting on to come to next week’s meeting to organize against this dangerous bill.

We are building a powerful community around the state. We’ve been on the ground in several communities in Eastern North Carolina, talking to the community about Community Violence Intervention programs, safe storage, and what’s at stake in the General Assembly. This is how we build towards a safer state, and build power to advocate at the local and state level. And: it's how we will hold elected officials accountable for their votes on dangerous legislation.
We're in it for the long haul. Join us.
Yours for a safer NC, Becky, Sara, & Adon |
