Team,
I’ve been careful not to be alarmist: but I think it’s time to speak plainly.
I’m writing to you today not as a political strategist or party chair — but as a citizen watching in horror as the way we vote in this country teeters on the brink.
This morning, Senator John Cornyn confirmed that the FBI will assist Texas law enforcement in tracking down state legislators who left the state to prevent the GOP from rushing through their racist, illegal, gerrymandering plan.
Let that sink in:
- The federal government is threatening to mobilize against our own elected officials. People who exercised their constitutional duty to stand up for democracy.
- Minority Leader Gene Wu and his colleagues are not hiding. They are standing up for free elections.
- They are using the threat of the FBI to primp and pose for Donald Trump, wondering who can be the bigger MAGA fan boy.
This call to “round them up” is chilling. I’m frankly horrified to be witnessing this history in action. Ken Paxton and John Cornyn, between them, know that breaking quorum isn’t illegal nor outside the job description for a Texas legislator. That's why they throw around bogus claims like “vacating” their seats.
But in this world today, we cannot ignore these threats, no matter how trumped up the charges seem. If we don’t take a stand now, we may not have the chance to do so later.
In other words: if this stands, this will be attempted everywhere.
I know this feels overwhelming, but silence is how our democracy breaks. We will not be silent, even in the face of this insane escalation.
Let’s show the nation we still believe in the principles of rule of law, fair play, and civic courage.
In solidarity,
Kendall, Chair, TDP
