President's Message

As vaccine rates in the US decline and cases of vaccine-preventable illnesses and immunization exemptions increase, access to school nurses—who are trusted messengers offering expertise and leadership in applying evidence-based immunization strategies—becomes even more crucial.

Last week, the CDC released new findings on vaccination coverage and exemptions among kindergartners. AAP also reaffirmed its longstanding position that exempting children for nonmedical reasons from immunizations is problematic for medical, public health, and ethical reasons, creating unnecessary risk to individuals and communities, aligning with NASN's position.

NASN strongly supports immunizations as a critical part of primary disease prevention. School nurses know firsthand how critical vaccines are to keeping students healthy, in school, and ready to learn.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a perfect time to ensure all students are current on their vaccines so they're ready for a healthy school year. Keep reading for new back-to-school vaccine resources from Unity® Consortium.

Leveraging the Skillset of School Nurses in Youth Suicide Prevention

While school nurses are well-positioned to mitigate suicide risk in students, few studies have reported on their role in prevention. The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) article The School Nurse Role in Youth Suicide Prevention: Results of a National Survey highlights the critical yet often overlooked role of school nurses in youth suicide prevention efforts within U.S. schools. The findings call for systemic changes within school districts to minimize exclusive practices so school nurses can integrate more fully into school-based mental health teams.

NASN members get complimentary access to JOSN and NASN School Nurse to stay current with the latest research, insights, and strategies to advance student health and school nursing practice.
